Bayern Munich superstar Sadio Mane has been named African Player of the Year during the illustrious CAF awards gala on Thursday evening.

The former Liverpool winger can look back at an incredible 2021/22 campaign that saw him lead his country Senegal to their first ever Africa Cup of Nations title in February.

Mane, who was named Player of the Tournament, netted three goals for his country, including the final penalty in the shootout of the final to beat Egypt.

The 30-year-old also won the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup with Liverpool, while finishing runners-up in Premier League and UEFA Champions League before completing a transfer to Bayern Munich.

Mane beat his former teammate Mohamed Salah, who lost out to Mane’s Senegal in the 2021 AFCON final and won the same domestic trophies, as well as national teammate Edouard Mendy.

The Chelsea shot stopper was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament at the AFCON and the Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper of 2021. He won the 2021 UEFA Super Cup in the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign as well as the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup, which was played out in February.

Mane won the African Player of the Year award for a second time after already lifting the accolade in 2019.
