Two Explosive Devices Detonate in Woolworths Stores Across South Africa in Less Than 24 Hours

SAPS are investigating two separate explosions at Woolworths stores, raising concerns over a possible pattern targeting the popular retailer.

The first incident occurred around 01h00 on Thursday, 28 May 2026, at the Woolworths branch inside Menlyn Park Shopping Centre in Pretoria. An unknown explosive device detonated on a store shelf while five staff members (packers) were working nearby. No one was injured, though shelves and food items sustained damage. The SAPS Bomb Disposal Unit, K9 teams, and detectives responded swiftly, cordoning off the scene.

Woolworths confirmed the incident and stated it is cooperating with authorities to establish the facts.

Just hours later, today, Friday morning, a second small explosion was reported at the Woolworths store in Preller Square, Bloemfontein. Details remain limited, but the area was briefly closed as police and the Hawks (Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation) took over the probe. No injuries have been reported in either case.

Authorities have not yet established any link between the two incidents or identified a motive. Both cases are being treated under the Explosives Act, with investigations ongoing.

The quick succession of blasts at Woolworths outlets in two major cities has sparked public alarm and speculation, though officials urge calm pending further evidence. No arrests have been made.

This is a developing story. Updates will follow as police release more information.
