Black Motion’s Thabo ‘Smol’ Mabongwane is exploring a new direction in music. The talented producer recently launched a new jazz-inspired project titled Dithupa tsa Smol.

Although the project sparked speculation that he could be stepping away from Black Motion, the musician made it clear that the group remains an important part of his journey and creative identity.

As reported by Daily Sun, Thabo explained that Black Motion will always be his home despite his growing interest in exploring different musical styles and collaborations.

New project inspired by Tshwane Jazz

The celebrated performer revealed that Dithupa tsa Smol is heavily influenced by the rich jazz culture of Tshwane.

According to him, the project was designed to reconnect listeners with authentic African sounds while celebrating the music that shaped his upbringing.

Thabo described the album as a tribute to Tshwane jazz and the traditions that continue to inspire his artistry. He also shared that the body of work had been in development for several years before finally being released to the public.

The musician added that the timing now felt right to introduce the project to fans who have supported his musical evolution over the years.

Collaboration at the heart of the album

Although many people view the release as his solo debut, Thabo stressed that the project was built through teamwork and collaboration. He worked alongside several artists and producers, including Spike Ramm, Mr Mufindi and DJ Buckz.

He explained that the album reflects a shared creative process rather than an individual effort, saying the contributors helped bring his vision to life.

Thabo also thanked supporters for continuing to support both his solo ventures and his work with Black Motion, promising that more music is still on the way.
