  • A devastating fire destroyed around 150 shacks in Pretoria’s Plastic View informal settlement, leaving thousands homeless.
  • Residents began rebuilding their homes on Monday using basic materials after losing most of their belongings in the blaze.
  • Authorities have not confirmed any deaths, and investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

Thousands of residents have been left displaced in Pretoria’s Plastic View informal settlement following a devastating fire that destroyed about 150 shacks.

The blaze broke out on Sunday evening, leaving many families with little to no belongings and forcing them to seek urgent assistance from the City of Tshwane.

On Monday morning, 25 May 2026, affected residents took it upon themselves to begin rebuilding their homes using corrugated iron sheets, wooden poles, and plastic covers.

It was a heartbreaking scene as some children were unable to attend school because most of their clothes, school items, and personal belongings were lost in the fire.

Emergency services in Tshwane have not yet confirmed whether there were any fatalities, while the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
