Tokyo Sexwale Calls Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala Explanation a “Cock and Bull Story”

Veteran ANC leader Tokyo Sexwale has accused President Cyril Ramaphosa of telling a “cock and bull story” and giving a “childish” explanation for the Phala Phala farm scandal.

Speaking on the SMWX podcast, Sexwale rejected Ramaphosa’s claim that large sums of undeclared US dollars found at his Limpopo farm in 2020 came from a cattle and game sale to a Sudanese businessman. Sexwale questioned how a foreign buyer could leave so much cash without declaration, noting that records suggest the businessman never entered South Africa. He called on Ramaphosa to appear before Parliament’s impeachment committee.

The scandal, first revealed in 2022 by former spy boss Arthur Fraser, led to a Constitutional Court ruling that the National Assembly acted unlawfully by dismissing an independent report. A 31-member committee is now probing the matter.

Sexwale, a former Robben Island prisoner and ANC heavyweight, said the affair has damaged key institutions like the police, SARS, and the Reserve Bank.

Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya had not responded to requests for comment.
