France Rejects World Cup Boycott Amid Trump Tensions

Posted on May 18, 2026

France’s government has stated it does not support boycotting the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This position comes amid US President Donald Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on eight European countries, including France, for opposing his efforts to annex Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. Sports Minister Marina Ferrari announced this stance on 20 January 2026.

Ferrari emphasized the importance of the event for sports enthusiasts. She noted hearing voices from certain political groups but affirmed no current desire for a boycott from the ministry.

Political Calls and International Context

Some French politicians have advocated for a boycott. Eric Coquerel, a senior far-left politician, questioned participating in the World Cup in a country that threatens neighbors and disregards international law. On 20 January 2026, Coquerel stated he could not envision France playing if Trump proceeds with his Greenland threats.

Claude Leroy, a veteran coach known for leading Cameroon to the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations title, suggested African teams consider boycotting the event, scheduled from 11 June 2026 to 19 July 2026. Leroy highlighted Trump’s behavior toward the continent in comments to French newspaper Figaro on 20 January 2026.

Germany’s government has deferred decisions on participation to sports associations like the German FA (DFB) and FIFA. State Minister for Sports Christiane Schenderlein clarified on 20 January 2026 that politicians do not decide on boycotts.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino maintains a close relationship with Trump, having awarded him a special “FIFA Peace Prize” at the World Cup draw in December 2025.

Sports Minister Marina Ferrari reiterated her belief in separating sport from politics, calling the World Cup an important moment for fans. “I am one who believes in keeping sport separate (from politics),” Ferrari told reporters on 20 January 2026, according to AFP.

Coquerel and Leroy have publicly called for boycotts, but no official response from the US government or Trump was mentioned in available sources. FIFA has not issued a statement on the matter as of 20 January 2026.
