- The Gautrain has confirmed that fares will remain unchanged for 2026, offering relief to commuters facing rising living costs.
- The rail service has also extended its R1 parking promotion until September 2026.
- Meanwhile, the Gautrain is entering a new operational phase following the end of its long-standing concession agreement with Bombela Concession Company.
The Gautrain has confirmed that it will not implement its annual fare adjustment this year, meaning commuters will continue paying the same prices as in 2025.
The decision is expected to provide relief for thousands of daily commuters as households across South Africa continue to face rising transport and fuel costs, along with broader cost-of-living pressures.
Gautrain Management Agency CEO Tshepo Kgobe said the Gautrain will also continue its R1 parking promotion, which allows passengers to park at Gautrain stations for just R1 per day when using the train service.
“The initiative, launched on 1 April 2025, will remain in place until 1 September 2026, further enhancing value for commuters who rely on integrated park-and-ride facilities,” said Kgobe.
Meanwhile, the Gautrain is entering a new operational phase following the end of its 19-and-a-half-year concession agreement with the Bombela Concession Company (BCC) earlier this year.
Passengers have been assured that services will continue without interruption, with the rail system expected to maintain the reliability and efficiency it has delivered since its inception.
The transition also marks a shift in oversight, with the Gautrain now falling under the Gauteng Provincial Government.
According to Gauteng government spokesperson Albi Modise, the conclusion of the BCC agreement marks the end of a significant chapter in one of South Africa’s largest and most successful Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects.
He added that the Gautrain will continue operating under the PPP model to ensure stability, continuity, and ongoing private-sector involvement.
The Bombela Operating Company (BOC) will continue managing the system under a contractual holdover arrangement for up to six months.
