The much-anticipated reserves league competition returned this weekend with some entertaining matches.
Before the kickoff of each match, the teams’ respective captains announced the charity or school they had selected to donate the prize money they would receive at the end of the competition.
Daine Klate-led Chippa United side were the first team to book their place in the competition’s semi-finals after edging TS Galaxy with a narrow one-nil victory on Saturday morning, thanks to Aviwe Mqokozo’s strike in the 10th minute. Both teams had many chances to find the back of the net in the second half. However, neither of the teams was clinical in their finishing in front of goal.
In the second quarter-final encounter, Mamelodi Sundowns defeated arch-rivals Orlando Pirates 2-1 to book a place in the last-eight. Masandawana are hoping for third-time luck in the competition after losing back-to-back finals against Kaizer Chiefs and Golden Arrows in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Cassius Mailula’s second-half brace was enough for Surprise Moriri’s charges. Mohau Nkota pulled one back for the Buccaneers in the stoppage time. However, it was late, and the damage had already been done.
2021/22 DStv Diski Challenge champions Stellenbosch reserves continued with their fine form defeating Maritzburg United 2-1 on Sunday morning to progress to the last four. Marvin Boji and Roy-Keane Avontuur were on the scoresheet for DDC champions, while Siphesihle Ngcobo found the back of the net for Maritzburg.
It was a goals galore encounter in the final quarter-final match between Kaizer Chiefs and Supersport United. Amakhosi won the six-goal thriller 4-2. Thanks to goals from Aden McCarthy and a first-half brace from Wandile Duba and Puso Dithejane. Tendamudzimu Matodzi scored a brace for Supersport, netting in each half.
In the semi finals, Kaizer Chiefs will take on Mamelodi Sundowns while Stellenbosch FC battle out against Chippa United. The venue and dates will be announced in due course.
