‘Not comfortable with Ronwen’: Bafana keepers slammed after Sundowns’ 11-goal thriller

South African football fans questioned the performances of Bafana Bafana goalkeepers Ronwen Williams and Ricardo Goss after Mamelodi Sundowns thrashed Siwelele FC 7-4 in a thrilling Betway Premiership clash at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

Masandawana stretched their lead at the top of the table to six points after putting seven goals past Goss in a ruthless attacking display.

However, despite the emphatic victory, supporters were far from convinced by Bafana captain Ronwen Williams, who was criticised for conceding what many described as soft goals during the entertaining encounter in Pretoria.

With the FIFA World Cup now less than a month away, concerns over Williams’ recent form continue to grow.

The Sundowns shot-stopper has conceded 16 goals this season and some fans fear he may not be at his sharpest heading into the global tournament.

Fans lose confidence in Bafana captain Ronwen Williams

“We really need to sign a goalkeeper as soon as possible. Ronwen Williams is extremely weak,” posted @MSFC__ on X.

“Truth be told, there is very little difference between Sipho Chaine and Ronwen Williams. Without solid defenders in front of them, it’s an open net for opponents,” wrote @Constitution_94.

“I am not comfortable going into the World Cup with Ronwen Williams as our number one goalkeeper. He has become too complacent and is making silly mistakes,” added @NhlivoT.

Another supporter, @vikrensee37817, felt the Bafana skipper needs to sharpen his positioning.

“Ronwen needs to improve his positional play going into the World Cup. He cannot keep getting beaten at the near post like that.”

Meanwhile, Goss also came under heavy criticism after conceding seven goals. He, along with Ronwen Williams are expected to be in the Bafana preliminary World Cup with the latter guaranteed selection.

“Goss has just lost his place in that Bafana team. Chaine and Peterson are going to the World Cup,” posted @dumikosi.

“Ricardo Goss must not come anywhere near Bafana after this performance. And he smiles after every goal,” wrote @P_Washered05.

Should Williams be dropped as Bafana’s number 1?
