Breaking News: Durban City FC win the Nedbank Cup

Durban City have their hands on silverware at last after a dramatic 2-1 win over TS Galaxy in the Nedbank Cup final at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.

It wasn’t straightforward, with Congolese striker Jean Lwamba right at the centre of the drama.

City started brightly and saw plenty of the ball, but went into the break trailing after a moment Lwamba would rather forget, turning the ball into his own net to hand TS Galaxy the lead.

DURBAN CITY TURN THE GAME AROUND IN STYLE

The second half told a completely different story. The Citizens came out with urgency and purpose, pinning Galaxy back and asking more questions.

The breakthrough finally came just before the hour mark when Mfanafuthi Mkhize arrived unmarked at the back post to tap home from Luphumlo Sifumba’s low delivery.

With just over 10 minutes left, Lwamba stepped up to rewrite his story. Picking up the ball in space, he produced a stunning outside-of-the-boot effort that looped over Ira Tape and into the net. From own goal to match-winner.

HISTORY MADE FOR KWAZULU-NATAL SIDE

At full-time, Durban City had done it, their first major trophy, and a moment that will live long in the club’s history.

It also marked a breakthrough for interim coach Pitso Dladla, who guided the team through cup glory after winning promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season.

For TS Galaxy, it’s another final that slips through their fingers, unable to recreate the magic of their famous 2019 triumph.
