- Three people drowned during a church baptism ceremony at a river in Mpumalanga after water levels suddenly rose.
- A 59-year-old woman and two teenagers lost their footing and were swept under the water.
- Police are investigating the incident and urging caution around open water.
Mpumalanga police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following a tragic drowning incident that occurred on Sunday, 26 April 2026, at the Wellas River.
It is reported that a church leader, accompanied by members of the congregation, had gathered at the river for prayer.
During the ceremony, a 59-year-old woman and two teenagers, aged 17 and 19, entered the water for baptism. While they were in the river, the group noticed that the water level was rising.
The older woman reportedly lost her footing and attempted to regain balance by holding onto the two teenagers. Tragically, all three lost stability and were swept under the water.
The church leader attempted to rescue the victims but was unsuccessful.
Police spokesperson Jabu Ndubane said all three were declared dead at the scene.
“Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are underway.
Police urge community members to exercise extreme caution when conducting activities in and around open water, particularly during religious or recreational events,” he added.
