Three key players who could help Chiefs beat Pirates in the derby

Kaizer Chiefs have suffered five consecutive league defeats against Orlando Pirates, a run they will be desperate to end this weekend in the Soweto Derby.

Given their recent record, even a draw could feel like progress for Amakhosi, especially after their heavy 3-0 loss to Pirates in February.

That defeat came during a difficult spell in which Chiefs endured a four-match losing streak and exited both the Nedbank Cup and the CAF Confederation Cup. However, the mood in Naturena has since shifted.

The Glamour Boys enjoyed a resurgence in March and April, stringing together five straight victories before their momentum was halted by Polokwane City last weekend.

With Pirates up next, Chiefs appear far more organised and confident than they were earlier in the season.

Here are three players who could make a decisive impact in the derby:

Lebohang Maboe

Chiefs lost the midfield battle in the previous derby, but Maboe’s recent form has been a major positive. Arguably the team’s standout performer in recent weeks, his ability to dictate tempo and link play could be key. If he controls the midfield, Chiefs’ attacking players are likely to benefit.

Glody Lilepo

The Congolese forward has been a reliable source of goals, netting nine times this season. Known for delivering in big moments, Lilepo also holds the distinction of being the last Chiefs player to score against Pirates in the league. His eye for goal could prove crucial once again.

Wandile Duba

Duba’s pace and directness offer Chiefs a different dimension in attack. Although he has featured in several derbies, he is still searching for his defining moment in this fixture.

Chiefs winless against Pirates in five league derbies

With three goals in recent weeks, the 22-year-old is in good form and eager to make an impact. His movement and speed could trouble Pirates’ defence, particularly if given space in behind.

If Chiefs’ co-coaches opt to start Duba, his current form and attacking threat could pose serious problems for the Buccaneers as Amakhosi look to finally turn the tide in South Africa’s biggest football clash.

Can Amakhosi get a rare win over their rivals?
