- Julius Mkhwanazi says allegations against him have taken a serious toll on his family, especially his children.
- He denies claims of corruption, kidnapping and links to criminal figures.
- His testimony continues at the Madlanga Commission as the case unfolds.
Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department chief Julius Mkhwanazi has told the Madlanga Commission that the allegations against him have taken a heavy toll on his family, particularly his children.
Mkhwanazi faces serious accusations, including corruption within the EMPD, the alleged kidnapping of EMPD spokesperson Kelebogile Thepa, and covering up the murder of a civilian on the East Rand.
He is also accused of having close links to alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
He has denied all the allegations, insisting he would never kidnap women or be involved in corruption as a law enforcement officer.
Mkhwanazi further claimed that Thepa’s emotional testimony before the commission was not genuine, despite her detailing incidents of hijacking, kidnapping and threats dating back to 2023.
Thepa has maintained that the alleged attacks were retaliation for her role in exposing the EMPD blue-light scandal involving Mkhwanazi and Matlala.
Mkhwanazi told the commission he is not capable of committing what he described as “a silly crime.” He added that the ongoing allegations have deeply affected his family, with his children being exposed to the claims on social media.
He is expected to continue his testimony before the commission on Wednesday, 15 April 2026.
