After visiting the mortuary where at least 20 young people were discovered dead inside a tavern in Scenery Park, East London, Police Minister Bheki Cele could hardly hold back his tears.
The incident is said to have occurred in the early hours of Sunday, June 26, 2022. The cause of death is still shrouded in mystery. An eyewitness, whose relative relayed the information to Algoa FM, claimed pepper spray was used.
The 15-year-old girl, who was celebrating the end of her exams at the Enyobeni nightclub, claims that ‘chaos broke out’ after this incident, with many people left ‘choking and coughing.’
Following the tragedy, Bheki Cele rushed to the scene and summoned members of the East London community. Cele, who discovered that children as young as 13 were also present at the tavern, inquired as to how parents were able to sleep at night without knowing where their children were.
“I stay with my boy who is in university in Cape Town. He came back home after 11pm on Friday night and I sat him down and told him you don’t come home after 11pm,” Cele said.
He, however, couldn’t keep his tough exterior up and burst into tears over the tragedy. The event was captured on television, including by Newzroom Afrika, which also shared the video on its social media platforms.
According to residents of the township where the tavern is located, the establishment sells alcohol to minors and is unconcerned about customer safety. There have since been growing calls for the tavern’s liquor licence to be revoked.
