The Democratic Alliance (DA) has revealed its new leadership ahead of the 2026 local elections, following John Steenhuisen’s decision to step down to focus on his role as Agriculture Minister within the Government of National Unity.

Geordin Hill-Lewis, the 39-year-old Mayor of Cape Town, takes over the helm of South Africa’s biggest opposition party from Steenhuisen, who has stepped down after almost seven years in office.

In his acceptance speech, Hill-Lewis vowed to use the upcoming local elections as a stepping stone to build the DA into the largest party in South Africa ahead of national elections in 2029.

Most of the newly appointed leaders are under the age of 50, aligning with growing calls from young South Africans to be represented by younger, more relatable leaders who may better understand and reflect their views and aspirations.
