  • Controversial businessman Suliman Carrim was rushed to hospital after suffering a suspected heart attack while exercising at a Johannesburg gym.
  • The incident occurred just days before he was due to resume his testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry regarding high-level corruption.
  • Carrim’s evidence involves allegations of money laundering and suspicious multi-million rand payments linked to SAPS tenders and organized crime.

Controversial businessman and ANC member Suliman Carrim was hospitalised on Monday morning following a suspected heart attack at a Johannesburg gym. Paramedics treated the North West businessman at the scene before transporting him to a medical facility.

While his current condition remains unconfirmed by family or medical staff, the timing of the emergency has raised significant questions regarding ongoing legal proceedings.

Carrim was scheduled to return to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry later this week to continue his testimony.

During his previous appearances in March 2026, he voiced serious concerns regarding his personal security. It is currently unclear whether this medical setback will force a postponement of his evidence or how it might impact the inquiry’s timeline.

The businessman’s testimony is central to unravelling a complex web of financial dealings involving tender tycoon Hangwani Maumela and alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

Carrim previously admitted to advancing R10 million to a company linked to a R360 million South African Police Service (SAPS) tender.

Evidence leaders are currently scrutinising these transactions, alongside a further R500,000 payment Carrim allegedly made under pressure, for potential ties to large-scale money laundering.
