- A Mamelodi man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the abuse of his 12-year-old stepdaughter.
- The crimes took place between 2022 and 2023 and were revealed when the child reported the matter to her parents.
- The court found that he had abused a position of trust and imposed the prescribed minimum sentence.
The Pretoria Magistrates’ Court has handed down a hefty sentence to a man from Mamelodi for the continuous rape of his girlfriend’s 12-year-old daughter.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday, 08 April 2026.
The perpetrator, whose name has been concealed to avoid secondary victimisation of the child victim, was further sentenced to five years’ direct imprisonment for sexual assault.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahankana said the court ordered that the life imprisonment sentence run concurrently with the five-year direct imprisonment sentence.
“Between 2022 and 2023, Mr X raped and sexually assaulted his girlfriend’s daughter at their place of residence in Mamelodi. This was discovered on 15 May 2023 when the mother of the victim fetched the child from her friend’s place of residence to prepare her to go to school after spending a weekend sleepover there.
On arrival at their home, the mother asked why the child did not return home as agreed. The victim informed the mother that her boyfriend had been continuously raping her. On the same day, after school, the child went to her father’s place of residence, where she told him that her mother’s boyfriend had been raping her,” Mahankana explained.
Following this revelation, the perpetrator was arrested, and the victim was offered medical, psychological, and legal assistance from the police and prosecutors.
During the court proceedings, he pleaded not guilty to all the charges levelled against him.
In delivering the sentence, the magistrate emphasised that he abused his position of trust as a guardian of the victim.
The magistrate found no substantial and compelling circumstances to deviate from imposing the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment.
