Mngqithi to Kaizer Chiefs? Amakhosi legend highlights key concern

Former Tsepo Masilela has shared his thoughts on the possibility of Manqoba Mngqithi taking over at Kaizer Chiefs.

Mngqithi, currently in charge of Golden Arrows, has recently been linked with a move to Amakhosi. With over a decade of experience at Mamelodi Sundowns, Masilela believes the seasoned tactician could add value at Naturena.

However, the former Chiefs defender cautioned that managing big personalities at a club of Chiefs’ stature could prove challenging.

“At big teams, you have experienced players who tend to have opinions or have a voice at times, and some coaches don’t like that,” Masilela said on Soccer Beat.

Masilela also reflected on Mngqithi’s brief spell as Sundowns head coach between July and November 2024, questioning some of his decisions.

“When I look at that situation at Sundowns again with Mokoena and Mudau, I couldn’t understand why those guys were not playing. The coach explained that they were rotating the team and wanted to keep everyone fresh,” he added.

He emphasised that strong man-management skills are essential at elite level.

“Man management in today’s game is key. If you can’t manage players with ego or strong personalities, then you lose the change room.”

Despite his concerns, Masilela believes Mngqithi could introduce a refreshing style of play at Kaizer Chiefs.

“He did mention you don’t need 40 passes to score goals. You can do it with four, five, or eight passes,” he said.

“When I look at his teams, they create a lot, plenty of box entries and it’s exciting when your team is always on the front foot, creating chances. It keeps fans on the edge, and I think his philosophy would definitely work for Kaizer Chiefs.”

Mngqithi is not the only local coach linked with Kaizer Chiefs. Other names reportedly in the mix include Benni McCarthy, Rulani Mokwena, and Pitso Mosimane.

With the Glamour Boys still searching for consistency, the big question remains: would Mngqithi be the right man to lead their revival?
