Ashraf Calvert and Vasco da Gama abruptly parted ways in May after just seven games for the newly promoted Hollywoodbets Super league side in the 2022 season.

Calvert was the brains behind their rapid rise to the female top-flight division in South Africa.

Provincially they won everything from the league, to the Amateur Coke Cup, and most importantly they gained promotion when they defeated City Lads in the final of the Sasol National League Championship in Durban. He was also key in the development of Miche Minnies, who has since gone on to join champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Calvert left his job at Clarewood JPM in the ABC Motsepe League so that he could give his full focus to their campaign. Below he goes into the main reason why the parties departed.

“They couldn’t pay me anything is the main reason, ” Calvert told iDiski Times.

“There is more to it but I don’t want to bad mouth the club. They didn’t like it when I spoke the truth about certain things, be it travelling arrangements or the health and safety of the players. The club is always pleeding poor and doesn’t have money. Before they parted ways I told them, Sunday will be my last game if the club can’t put a contract on the table, I waited two months already.”

Calvert says that he wrote a letter to management so that he can sort out his contract as he was never paid for the last two months since being promoted to the top flight.

“Last season I had a contract for petrol money, They never even honoured that contract,” added the former Clarewood JPM coach.

“They paid me a once-off payment at the end of March this year. I worked from March to Feb in the Sasol league and they never offered me anything. I kept asking for a contract but nothing. They kept saying exco meetings and I chose the ladies over Clarewood cause they would overlap this season. Now I’m a free agent waiting for the right opportunity.”

There has been huge interest in the services of Calvert since he walked away from Vasco, but he is yet to decide what his next move will be.
