Three pedestrians have been killed on the N4 toll road between Machadodorp and Belfast in Mpumalanga on Good Friday 2026.
The trio was struck by a sedan on Friday afternoon. The deceased include a woman and two minors, presumed to be her children, who all died at the scene due to the impact.
Mpumalanga police say an investigation into the crash is underway, with authorities probing three counts of culpable homicide.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the family.
Macie also called on motorists to always be on the lookout for pedestrians. The MEC said that even during previous holidays, many people lost their lives while walking on the road.
“Motorists must always be on the lookout for pedestrians. We are also pleading with pedestrians to be cautious and only cross the road in designated places, and only when it is safe to do so,” he said.
Meanwhile, a 35-year-old driver has been arrested for driving at 200 kilometres per hour in a 120 km/h zone on the N3 toll road between Villiers and Heidelberg.
On the same road, a 38-year-old Pakistani male was arrested for driving at 176 kilometres per hour.
Both drivers were charged with reckless and negligent driving at Grootvlei Police Station and were released on R2 000 bail each.
