KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli has confirmed that Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s contract as KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner has been renewed, ending uncertainty over its expiry.

In a clip from the KZN Tonight podcast shared on Saturday, Ntuli said National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola had formally written to him seeking concurrence, which he has since granted.

Ntuli said the renewal followed discussions with national police commissioner Fannie Masemola, who formally approved the extension, with the premier giving official concurrence as required by law.

“On the issue of the contract renewal of Lt General Mkhwanazi, it has been renewed, the national commissioner has written to me, and I’ve also given concurrence officially now, so I don’t think there is an issue regarding that,” he said.

Mkhwanazi’s initial five-year term was set to end on 31 March 2026, and while an extension had been expected following earlier confirmation from Masemola, the premier’s announcement on Saturday has now removed any doubt.

Mkhwanazi has gained national prominence for his tough stance on organised crime, including crackdowns on taxi violence, syndicates and politically motivated killings in KwaZulu-Natal.
