‘I will play Sundowns players on Tuesday’: Broos dismisses fatigue concerns

Hugo Broos has made it clear that he will not ring the changes when Bafana Bafana face Panama national football team in their second international friendly on Tuesday.

The two sides played to a 1-1 draw at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday evening, in what served as part of South Africa’s preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in June.

Having already settled on his 23-man squad, the Belgian mentor is keen to maintain continuity and build momentum, confirming that he will largely stick with the same starting XI.

Broos not resting Sundowns players

“No, there will be no changes, not at all. I know Sundowns players have an overloaded program next week, but that’s not my problem. I have to prepare for the World Cup,” said Broos told the media.

“Sundowns have 35 players, they can rotate. Whether Mokoena, Modiba or Mudau play or not, they can still compete. I don’t see any problem for me.”

Six players in Bafana’s starting line-up against Panama were from Mamelodi Sundowns, a side currently juggling commitments in both the Betway Premiership and the CAF Champions League.

The Brazilians face a demanding April schedule, with as many as eight matches on the horizon, raising concerns over player fatigue for key figures such as Khuliso Mudau and Ronwen Williams.

Another Sundowns player, Jayden Adams, made a strong impression off the bench in the first encounter and could be rewarded with a starting role on Tuesday should Broos decide to bench Sphephelo Sithole.

His increased involvement, however, may add to the concerns of Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso, who will be eager to have his squad fresh and injury-free after the international break.

Despite these concerns, Broos remains unmoved, insisting that Sundowns’ squad depth should be sufficient to cope with any absences.

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates could stand to benefit domestically if Sundowns drop points due to player fatigue or rotation, particularly in the league.

Should Downs players be rested?
