- A substation explosion and distribution bar flash have caused widespread power outages across Roodepoort.
- City Power technicians are currently assessing damaged infrastructure, with full repairs estimated to take up to four days.
- The utility warned of repeated supply trips as teams struggle to stabilise the network following the initial blast.
City Power is currently working to restore electricity to several suburbs across Roodepoort and surrounding areas in West Johannesburg following a major substation explosion on Thursday.
Technical teams were dispatched to the site after a distribution bar flash caused significant damage to the local infrastructure.
The failure has led to a series of secondary faults, with power repeatedly tripping shortly after initial restoration attempts.
Spokesperson Isaac Mangena confirmed that the scale of the disruption is extensive, affecting numerous interconnected substations across the region.
While some preliminary work began immediately, the bulk of the complex repairs and investigations were scheduled for Friday morning to ensure a more stable return to service for the majority of residents.
The utility has warned that full repairs could take up to four days, depending on the exact location and severity of the structural damage uncovered by technicians.
As teams continue to assess the site, City Power remains cautious about providing a definitive timeline for total restoration, citing the volatile nature of the damaged distribution bars.
