Liverpool defender eligible for South Africa

Even the most fanatical football fan might not know that up-and-coming Liverpool defender Carter Pinnington does in fact have the eligibility to play for South Africa.

The talented teenager has represented England at U15, U16 and U18 levels, while he has been working his way through the Liverpool youth system.

In the next few years he is tipped to make his senior debut, but in a light-hearted interview, he revealed an interesting fact about himself – and that is his eligibility to represent South Africa.

Young Liverpool defender with a connection to South Africa

While the Wirral-born prospect is fully expected to go on to play for England, his father, Steuart Pennington, is a well-known figure in South Africa. He is an author and public speaker who founded the platform “South Africa: The Good News,” which focuses on highlighting positive developments and progress within the country.

Under FIFA rules, because his father was born in South Africa, Carter is a dual national. This puts him in a similar category to other “overseas-based” players that the South African Football Association (SAFA) often keeps an eye on.

While Carter is making his name in elite football, his father has spent decades analysing and promoting the “macro” success stories of South Africa, often speaking about the resilience and potential of the nation.

Who is Carter Pinnington?

Pinnington has emerged as one of the most promising defensive prospects within Liverpool’s Academy, distinguished by a technical composure that belies his young age.

Primarily a centre back, he is noted for his exceptional ball-playing’ ability – a trait that has seen him occasionally deployed in a holding midfield role.

The youngster earned him his first professional contract in May 2024, and he has become a vital figure in Liverpool’s youth league campaigns.

The 2025–26 campaign has marked a significant milestone in his professional development. In October 2025, Pinnington received his first call-up to the senior matchday squad, named as a substitute for a League Cup tie against Crystal Palace at Anfield.

While he continues to refine his game at the U21 level, his inclusion in senior training sessions suggests he is firmly on the radar for a first-team breakthrough in the near future.
