The Lukhanyo Mdingi label was founded in Cape Town in 2015, driven by a core belief in the preservation of craftsmanship. The brand itself has continually collaborated with artisans on the African continent, from weavers to textile artisans.

Lukhanyo himself usually reflects on the sentiments woven into his fabrics with a soulful serenade.

In an interview with Drum Magazine, Lukhanyo expressed that his fashion inspiration comes from the South African television scene of the late 90s and early 2000s, where fashion and music intertwined seamlessly. “I think this became the foundation of me being interested in the whole industry, fashion design specifically, I think that is the premise of my earliest memories of fashion.”

In the vibrant fashion scene of South Africa, the brand Lukhanyo Mdingi distinguishes itself by effortlessly merging South African heritage with global aspirations. His approach to fashion is both practical and visionary, highlighting the significance of balancing creativity with the skills he has developed over time.

Over the years, the Lukhanyo Mdingi brand has done tremendously well. In 2021, the brand won the coveted LVMH Prize, and in 2023, won the Amiri Prize, which came with $100,000 and a year of mentorship.

The mentorship enabled global recognition, as well as the opportunity to learn from fashion industry greats.

With the continuous spirit of collaboration, it is safe to say Lukhanyo Mdingi will continue shaping luxury fashion on the African continent and the global sphere.
