  • Conjoined twin boys born in Limpopo have been successfully separated in a complex surgery.
  • The procedure marks a historic first for a rural hospital in South Africa.
  • Both babies are stable and recovering in the neonatal ICU.

The Limpopo Department of Health is celebrating a major milestone in healthcare following the successful surgery of conjoined identical twins.

The twins, who were born at Mankweng Tertiary Hospital, have been successfully separated.

The twin boys were born on 28 January 2026, sharing a liver, intestines, and blood vessels. They underwent a complex separation surgery on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.

They are in a stable condition and are recovering in the hospital’s neonatal ICU unit.

Limpopo Premier, Phophi Ramathuba, has hailed the team of medical doctors which was led by paediatric surgeon Nyaweleni Tshifularo.

She said Prof Tshifularo has helped put Limpopo on the map, as it was the first time the province performed such a surgery.

“It is also the first time such a major operation is done in a rural hospital because, after all, to us rural health matters the most. This operation represents a historic moment for Limpopo.

For the first time in South Africa, a rural hospital has accomplished such a high-scale operation. This achievement changes the landscape of healthcare in our province and reaffirms our belief in the potential of rural hospitals. It is a clear call for us all to invest resources in our rural facilities,” she said.

The procedure is also among the only handful of successful conjoined twin separations in South Africa.
