Black Coffee’s old outfit photo resurfaces at 50

Turning 50 is a milestone worth celebrating. For South African superstar DJ Black Coffee, the occasion came with plenty of love from fans around the world. But it also came with a dose of good old internet humour.

As birthday tributes poured in online, an old photo of the Grammy-winning DJ resurfaced on social media. The image quickly grabbed attention, not because of the celebration itself, but because of the outfit he was wearing.

Before long, the internet had opinions.

A birthday post that turned into a roast session

The resurfaced image shows Black Coffee, whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, wearing a bold and unusual outfit that many fans found amusing. What began as a birthday moment soon turned into a light-hearted roasting session across social media platforms.

Users joked about the fashion choice and compared the look to everything from experimental runway pieces to unexpected throwback styles. Some questioned what inspired the outfit in the first place, while others simply leaned into the humour.

Despite the teasing, the tone remained mostly playful. Many fans still used the moment to celebrate the DJ’s incredible career and achievements.

Fans balance jokes with admiration

Even while poking fun at the old picture, many people made it clear that the jokes came with respect. Black Coffee has long been one of South Africa’s most recognised music exports, and his journey from local clubs to global stages is well documented.

Fans congratulated him on reaching 50 and praised the impact he has had on the global house music scene. Messages celebrating his success and influence sat alongside the jokes about the outfit.

It is the kind of reaction that often happens with beloved public figures. The roasting may be loud, but so is the admiration.

A career that changed the global perception of African DJs

The birthday moment also reminded many fans of how far Black Coffee has come. Over the years, he has become one of the most influential figures in electronic music.

His 2015 album Pieces of Me helped push South African house music to new audiences around the world. He later became the first South African DJ to win the Breakthrough DJ of the Year award at the DJ Awards in Ibiza.

His career continued to grow from there. He won Best International Act Africa at the BET Awards in 2016, secured a historic residency in Ibiza, and won a Grammy in 2022 for Best Dance or Electronic Album with Subconsciously. In 2023, he reached another major milestone by headlining and selling out Madison Square Garden.

Those achievements have made him a cultural icon not just in South Africa but globally.

The internet never forgets

The resurfaced outfit photo is a reminder of one simple truth about the internet. Old moments never really disappear.

For celebrities, especially, a single image can return years later and take on a life of its own online. Sometimes it sparks nostalgia. Other times, like this one, it sparks laughter.

But if the reactions to Black Coffee’s birthday are anything to go by, the DJ is still held in high regard. Fans may joke about an old-fashioned choice, yet they continue to celebrate the man behind the music.

And at 50, Black Coffee remains one of South Africa’s most influential artists.
