Home Affairs Minister reveals complete overhaul of SA’s immigration system

Home Affairs minister Aaron Motsoaledi has declared his intentions to completely overhaul South Africa’s immigration system. He confirmed that more details ‘will be unveiled soon’ – but the Home Affairs Minister also let a few details slip on Wednesday.

‘HUGE CHANGES’ COMING TO SA’S IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

Motsoaledi has been championed by anti-immigration groups like Operational Dudula and Put South Africans First in the past few months, after the minister took a hardline stance on foreigners entering SA illegally.

He’s also earned praise from sections of ActionSA. However, Motsoaledi isn’t content with revelling in the plaudits. He wants to take things much further, and he’s promised to institute ‘radical changes’ for the Home Affairs department.

HOW WILL A ‘COMPLETE OVERHAUL’ OF SOUTH AFRICA’S IMMIGRATION SYSTEM ACTUALLY WORK? AARON MOTSOALEDI TEASES DETAILS.

Although he admitted he’d need ‘another budget speech’ to outline his full intentions on tackling illegal immigration, Motsoaledi did reveal a few changes that his ministry wants to make – and some plans have already been enacted.

  • More border guards – picked from communities along the border in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KZN and Free State – have been recruited.
  • There will be a MAJOR redevelopment at six key national points of entry, including Beitbridge and Lebombo.
  • Raids at corrupt Home Affairs branches are planned ‘within the next few weeks’. Four officials in Soweto were arrested TODAY.
  • Motsoaledi also wants to lead a crack-down on South Africans who ‘sell their identity documents’ to foreigners.
  • One-Stop-Border-Post (OSBP) legislation will be completed ‘by the end of the financial year’.
  • This will allow better infrastructure to be implemented at some of the busier border crossing points in SA.

AARON MOTSOALEDI STICKING TO HIS GUNS

Aaron Motsoaledi has called the immigration situation in Mzansi a ‘serious crisis’. Though his rhetoric on undocumented foreigners has upset a few organizations – namely the EFF – it would appear that the minister isn’t backing down any time soon.

“At the moment, it will suffice to say we have decided on a complete overhaul of the immigration system of the country. Complete overhaul means exactly that. Work in this regard is well underway and we will soon unveil it.”

“Immigration is another major concern of ours. I don’t have to outline what is taking place in our country about this problem. It is a crisis we are all well aware of. However, if I were to start to outline it here, it will need its own budget speech.”
