Nomcebo Dot releases debut album The Journey after three-year hiatus

South Africa’s creative scene is having a moment and two powerful stories from the country’s music and film industries are proving just that.

While singer Nomcebo Dot has stepped back into the spotlight with her long-awaited debut album The Journey, filmmakers Jason Jacobs and Devon Delmar are celebrating a major victory after their film Variations on a Theme won Best African Film at the Joburg Film Festival 2026 Gala Awards.

Together, the two milestones highlight the depth of storytelling emerging from South Africa, whether through music or cinema.

A long-awaited return for Nomcebo Dot

After stepping away from the spotlight for three years, Nomcebo Dot has officially returned with The Journey, a debut album that reflects both personal growth and artistic evolution.

The KwaZulu-Natal-born artist built her reputation through emotionally driven tracks and genre-blending sounds, earning recognition with songs like “Isithembiso” alongside Musa Sukwene and the energetic gqom favourite “Volcano.”

During her hiatus, Dot quietly worked behind the scenes refining her sound and shaping the identity of the album.

Now, that work has finally come to life.

“I am beyond excited to share The Journey with the world,” she said, describing the project as deeply personal.

According to the singer, every track reflects lessons learned during her time away from the industry.

An album built on hope and reflection

The album’s lead single, “God’s Love Overflow,” is already drawing attention for its uplifting message.

Built around themes of resilience, faith and love, the track sets the emotional tone for the rest of the project.

Listeners have been quick to react online, with many praising the song’s heartfelt lyrics and layered production. On social media, fans have described the track as “healing”, while others say it feels like a spiritual comeback for the artist.

The album itself moves across multiple musical styles, blending contemporary African sounds with storytelling that reflects Dot’s personal experiences.

For the singer, the project is more than just a debut record.

“Each track holds a special place in my heart, and I hope they resonate with everyone who listens,” she said.

A multifaceted South African talent

Music is only one part of Nomcebo Dot’s creative portfolio.

Over the years, she has also built a presence in television, appearing in popular South African series such as Uzalo and Amalanga Awafani.

Her ability to move between music and acting has positioned her as a versatile performer in the country’s entertainment industry.

International recognition has followed as well. Dot recently received an award for Outstanding Musical and Film Brand at the Emerging Brands in Africa Awards — her fifth international honour.

She credited the achievement to the support of her team and fans.

Joburg film festival victory shines spotlight on local stories

While Dot celebrates her musical comeback, another South African success story unfolded at the Joburg Film Festival.

Variations on a Theme, directed by Jason Jacobs and Devon Delmar, took home the Best African Film award at the festival’s 2026 gala ceremony.

The film explores a deeply emotional and often overlooked chapter of South African history.

Set in the Kharkamss community, the story centres on people waiting for reparations linked to ancestors who fought in the World War II.

Jacobs described the film as a portrait of patience, grief and resilience.

At the centre of the narrative is Hettie, an elderly goat herder who becomes the victim of a scam promising long-overdue payments for her father’s wartime service.

As she waits for money that will never arrive, the story unfolds against the backdrop of her approaching 80th birthday — a moment that threatens to strip away her last sense of independence.

According to Jacobs, the film reflects both loss and strength within the community.

“It chronicles the resilience they carry within their sports and within their hearts,” he explained.

A powerful moment for South African storytelling

Both The Journey and Variations on a Theme highlight something uniquely South African: storytelling that draws deeply from real experiences, history and emotion.

Whether through music or film, artists across the country are increasingly using their platforms to explore themes of resilience, identity and social history.

For audiences, it’s a reminder that the local creative industry continues to produce work that resonates far beyond the country’s borders.

And for Nomcebo Dot, the message behind her album title feels especially fitting.

After three years away, her own journey, much like the stories celebrated at the Joburg Film Festival — is only just beginning.
