Chiefs’ Lilepo rewarded for super-strike against Gallants

‘The ball came off my foot perfectly and the next thing it was in the net,’ said the Congolese winger.

Kaizer Chiefs winger Glody Lilepo says he is “very happy” to have been awarded the Betway Premiership Goal of the Month for January and February.

Chiefs’ Lilepo’s cross-shot

Lilepo let fly with what looked like it could be an attempted cross in the 66th minute of Chiefs’ 1-0 Premiership win over Marumo Gallants on January 28.

Whether by luck or by judgement, however, the ball flew past Gallants goalkeeper Washington Arubi and into the back of the net.

“The ball came off my foot perfectly and the next thing it was in the net. I am very happy to win this award on behalf of Kaizer Chiefs and my teammates because goals aren’t scored individually,” Lilepo told the Chiefs website.

“They always come from team play. More important than anything personal is that it turned out to be the only goal of the game, and it won us three points.”

Chiefs could do with a few more special goals from Lilepo. Since that game against Gallants, their season has taken a sharp downturn.

14 points behind

Knocked out of the Nedbank Cup and Caf Confederation Cup, three consecutive Premiership defeats have seen Amakhosi slip some 14 points behind league leaders Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Goalscoring has been a major problem all season for Chiefs, while their defence, which was keeping their title challenge afloat, has fallen apart over the last month or so.
