  • Former MP Vincent Smith received an effective seven-year prison term for corruption, fraud, money laundering, and tax offences.
  • Smith admitted to accepting undisclosed gratifications from BOSASA via his company, Euroblitz 48, and failing to declare approximately R28 million in taxable income.
  • While handed a 12-year sentence per count, five years were suspended, marking a significant victory for the National Prosecuting Authority’s anti-corruption efforts.

The Johannesburg High Court has sentenced former MP Vincent Smith to an effective seven years in prison following a plea and sentence agreement.

Presiding Judge Ismail ratified the deal under Section 105A of the Criminal Procedure Act, condemning the “scourge” of corruption currently eroding societal foundations.

Smith pleaded guilty to breaching the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act (PRECCA) and the Tax Act.

The charges stemmed from his failure to disclose interests and payments received from BOSASA to the Parliamentary Registrar. These activities involved his firm, Euroblitz 48, and former BOSASA executive Angelo Agrizzi.

Between 2009 and 2018, Smith also neglected to declare nearly R28 million in taxable income related to Euroblitz.

Although charges against the company itself were withdrawn, Smith’s personal accountability remained central to the prosecution.

Advocate Andy Mothibi, National Director of Public Prosecutions, remarked that while the legal process was lengthy, the verdict confirms that the “wheels of justice” eventually turn, upholding the rule of law against high-level misconduct.
