Motale warns Chiefs have danger

Saturday sees Kaizer Chiefs host Orlando Pirates in the first Soweto derby of this 2025/26 Betway Premiership. The games will kick off at 15:30 at the FNB Stadium.

As the league table suggests, the Buccaneers are enjoying a better season with eight points ahead of Amakhosi.

KAIZER CHIEFS ARE LESS DANGEROUS, BUT

Orlando Pirates have also secured two trophies this season, with the MTN8 and Carling Knockout trophies already in Parktown.

The Sea Robbers are the second-highest scoring team in the league with 26 goals in 17 games, while Kaizer Chiefs have scored 16 in 16 games.

Speaking ahead of the game, Motale has reminded Pirates that the derby does not respect what has happened prior in the season.

“You know, the derby is a funny thing,” Motale said on SuperSport. “Kaizer Chiefs are not doing well, they are limping.

“But when it comes to the derby out’yaka, you don’t sit on your laurels and say they are limping, you understand?

“If I hear the word Chiefs, already I’m motivated. When they hear the word Pirates, they’re immediately motivated. If you underestimate anyone, you will be shocked.

“When you’re talking about a derby, it is like a motivator motivating a motivator,” Motale concluded.

REMEMBER THE LAST SOWETO DERBY?

While Kaizer Chiefs were also not doing so well last season, the Glamour Boys won the previous derby. It was none other than last season’s Nedbank Cup final. Yusuf Maart’s late winner crowned the club their first trophy in 10 years.

Gaston Sirino had opened the scoreboard with a well-taken penalty before Evidence Makgopa’s superb equaliser, but Maart had the last say.

Amakhosi won the game despite finishing in 9th in the Betway Premiership the week before the final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
