South African DJ and radio personality DJ Speedsta has stirred debate online after unveiling his Top 10 South African hip hop MCs of all time.

Taking to social media, Speedsta shared his personal ranking, placing late rapper AKA at number one, followed by Cassper Nyovest at number two.

Rising lyricist KI secured the third spot, while Nasty C ranked fourth.

Veteran rapper Khuli Chana came in at number five, with Emtee in sixth place.

The late Riky Rick ranked seventh, followed by Kwesta at number eight.

Avant-garde rapper Okmalumkoolkat secured the ninth spot, while A-Reece rounded out the list at number 10.

In addition to the ranking, Speedsta noted that hip hop pioneers ProKid and HHP are “at the top of the tree,” acknowledging their foundational impact on South African hip hop.

Social media reacts

As expected, the list quickly sparked mixed reactions among fans.

One user emphasised that the ranking reflected personal preference rather than fact, writing: “Please note that is just Speedsta opinion! Not to be confused with actual facts and a true reflection of reality.”

Another commenter expressed fatigue over such debates, saying: “This thing of naming top MCs is kinda boring these days.”

However, some critics strongly disagreed with the placements.

One user questioned Nasty C’s ranking above Khuli Chana and Kwesta, commenting: “Nasty C better than Khuli Chana and Kwesta?? Yo Speedsta needs to stfu honestly, the little respect we have for this nigga is quickly running out.”
