Moses Makoso, 31, of De Deur in Johannesburg, was found guilty of premeditated murder, rape, and kidnapping of a six-year-old girl, as well as obstruction of justice, by the High Court in Pretoria.

The shocking crime occurred on April 29, 2021, according to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Regional Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana. The girl and two boys had gone to the bush near Makoso’s house in Maboloka, Brits, to get cucumbers.

“Makoso called the three children to his house. He then instructed the brother and the friend to go back home to wear shoes. He promised to give them fish on their return. The two boys left and he then led the little girl back to the bushes where he raped, strangled her to death and set her body alight,” the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Regional Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.

When the boys returned to Makoso’s house, no one was there. They then informed the young girl’s aunt of what had occurred. She later went to her local police station and reported the missing child.

“The community and the family searched for the missing child. Only on the following day that they went to Makoso’s house. They apprehended and handed him over to the police,” Mahanjana said.

According to the NPA, Moses Makoso eventually confessed to raping and killing the girl before setting her body on fire. He also showed local officers where he disposed of her body.
