Bafana Bafana Head Coach Hugo Broos has denounced the introduction of the DStv Compact Cup within the FIFA break period because it has a domino effect on the national teams’ preparation for the AFCON qualifiers.
Broos was talking about the tournament that was introduced in January, after announcing his squad for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Morocco.
The Belgian coach was not impressed by the competition and questioned why it was played in the first place.
“ We have six weeks break in January, I ask myself why? Why do you need? In my country okay because it can snow, it can freeze, the temperature is low but here it’s summer, said Broos on SABC Sport.
“ So four weeks is enough I think, and then they organise a stupid competition where the people can choose the players for the team, the trainers for the team because it’s six weeks break. I’m very sorry, when I see that I ask myself but please guys what are you doing?
“So if there is four weeks every coach will be happy in this country. Now they have six weeks, what are we going to do in six weeks? So if there is four weeks, everything should be finished now. That is planning, that is organisation, this is professionalism. I’m very sorry but when I see that again I don’t have to fight now here. They have to play three games, when are they gonna to play that? Then you have to play it in the FIFA period, in the preparation of the national team for a very important game in Morocco. ”
Bafana Bafana will play away against Morocco in their opening game of Group K, having last beaten the Atlas Lions over 20 years ago at the 2002 AFCON in Mali, by a 3-1 scoreline.
