Why Kaizer Chiefs’ CAF Confed Cup exit might be a good thing

Kaizer Chiefs will turn their attention to the Betway Premiership after being knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup on Saturday.

The Soweto giants needed a win or a draw to secure a place in the quarter-final but a 2-1 defeat away to Zamalek and Al Masry beating ZESCO United saw the Glamour Boys finish third in their group.

Having been eliminated from the Nedbank Cup earlier this month, Amakhosi only have the league to play for. They are eight points behind rivals Orlando Pirates but have a game in hand.

In the past two seasons, Kaizer Chiefs failed to finish in the top eight, but they should comfortably make the top half of the table with matches left to spare.

Their league form has been impressive, winning three consecutive matches in 2026.

Can Kaizer Chiefs win the league?

Amakhosi will need to win 12 of their remaining matches at least to stand a chance. Mamelodi Sundowns and Pirates appear to be front-runners for the title, with Chiefs being the dark horses.

They will have to get wins over the two teams and maintain good form in the next three months,

The good thing is that Kaizer Chiefs have a week to rest after the CAF Confederation Cup exit. They only play next week against Stellenbosch at home.

If Pirates and Downs can cancel each other midweek and Amakhosi win their Stellies match as well as the Soweto derby, they might be in contention once again.

Can Amakhosi continue with their league form?
