Rulani to have the last laugh?

MC Alger head coach Rulani Mokwena could bury Mamelodi Sundowns’ chances of winning the CAF Champions League this weekend.

The 39-year-old South African tactician was in charge of the Brazilians for four years before he was unceremoniously fired.

Speaking to the media after his sacking in July 2024, Mokwena felt Downs were unfair given how he improved the team.

Failure to win the CAF Champions League and domestic cups was one of the reasons the former Orlando Pirates coach was let go at Chloorkop.

Will Rulani get his revenge on Sundowns?

Two weeks after he was fired, Mokwena joined Wydad Casablanca but lasted less than a season with the Moroccan giants. He then went to Algeria to coach MC Alger and his team are currently top of the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1.

Alger are in the same group as his former club Mamelodi Sundowns. In their first meeting, the two teams drew 0-0 in Algeria.

With one round remaining in the group stages, all eyes are on Rulani this weekend in Pretoria as Sundowns look to reach the knockout stages.

Defeat or a draw will see Masandawana bow out in the group stages. Mokwena will most likely play a defensive game, knowing his team just needs a draw to go through.

If Rulani gets one over Sundowns, it will feel like a sweet revenge given how he left the club he served for a decade.

Failure to reach the knockout round will be a disaster for Sundowns given how much they spent this season. Head coach Miguel Cardoso will surely be dismissed if his side fails to beat MC Alger on Saturday.

Can Mokwena produce a masterclass?
