DJ Black Coffee
Renowned DJ and philanthropist Black Coffee is taking steps to improve children’s access to eye care across South Africa with the launch of the Gift of Sight by Black Coffee initiative.
The programme officially kicks off on Monday, 09 February 2026, at Thabisang Primary School in Soweto, where over 700 learners will undergo comprehensive vision screenings during a school uniform handover organised by the foundation.
Children identified with potential vision issues will receive full eye examinations and free spectacles during follow-up visits, ensuring that problems are addressed promptly.
The initiative aims to tackle the often-overlooked connection between eyesight and academic performance, recognising that early detection of vision problems can dramatically improve a child’s ability to read, write, concentrate, and participate fully in school and other activities.
Following the Gauteng launch, the programme will expand to schools in other provinces, providing learners nationwide with the opportunity to have their eyesight tested.
The project is run in partnership with Tania Noach Optometrist T/A Vision Works Benmore, Morningside Eye, the South African Optometric Association (SAOA), and EyeCare4Kids, with generous support from Love Maison33 and JHB VIP.
Beyond basic screening, children requiring advanced treatment or surgery will be referred to specialists through partner organisations that can provide the necessary care.

“Something as simple as a missed vision problem can make learning harder, affect confidence, and limit a child’s potential. Through the Gift of Sight by Black Coffee project, we want to ensure that eyesight is not a barrier to opportunity. We’re proud to begin in Orlando West, Soweto, and we are committed to expanding these tests across South Africa throughout the year.”
