A lifeline secured: NSFAS releases billions to support students

For thousands of South African students, the anxiety of tuition costs and empty cupboards is beginning to lift.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) confirmed on Thursday, 6 February 2026, that a massive financial injection is already hitting campuses, providing a vital safety net for youth striving to complete their degrees.

Behind the massive numbers are the lived realities of students like those in the TVET sector, who have been waiting on extended registration periods to secure their funding.

Acting CEO Wassem Carrim emphasised that while billions are moving through the system, the human element, the right to appeal a rejection, remains a top priority for the 2026 cycle.

The appeals process offers a second chance for over 91 000 applicants who feel their financial hardships were overlooked.

With over 10 000 appeals already green-lit, the scheme is urging the remaining 27 000 students currently in the “in process” queue to keep their contact details updated and respond to queries within the strict 30-day window.

“NSFAS remains committed to processing all appeals fairly, transparently, and efficiently,” Carrim stated.

“For many, this isn’t just a bureaucratic update; it’s the difference between a classroom seat and being left behind.”

As the February 13 payment date approaches for TVET colleges, the focus remains on ensuring no student is forced to drop out due to a lack of resources.
