  • Johannesburg and Midrand residents remain without water following a major blackout that disrupted Rand Water systems.
  • Emergency repairs and emptied reservoirs could take up to a week to fully recover.
  • City officials say water tankers are being deployed while restoration efforts continue.

Another hot day in Johannesburg, and Midrand residents are still without water following a major blackout.

Residents woke up to dry taps on Monday morning, forcing many to seek alternative ways to access water. This comes after supply systems came under severe pressure following emergency repair work and operational disruptions at key Rand Water facilities.

However, Johannesburg Water supplied water tankers to some areas for temporary relief.

On Tuesday, MMC for Environment and Infrastructure, Jack Sekwaila, assured residents that the City of Johannesburg is working closely with major water utilities to restore supply.

Sekwaila provided an update while attending to a wall collapse in Doornfontein near the Johannesburg CBD on Monday.

“What is left now is for that particular volume of water to come from the water site to this part of Johannesburg. They have done their pumping, and we have requested them to pump even overnight so that we can recover on our side.

“But I must indicate that the entire system from Klipfontein reservoir and Rand Water’s side was empty all the way to Midrand, Greater Ivory and surrounding areas. All those reservoirs were emptied, which means we might need about a week to recover.”

Sekwaila added that residents may still feel the pinch before water systems are fully restored.
