  • Andile Mngwevu’s remains were found in Mozambique after he was swept away by floods earlier this month.
  • His family has requested privacy as they mourn his tragic passing.
  • The ANC has extended condolences, describing him as a principled servant of the people.

Ekurhuleni’s MMC for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu’s remains were found on Tuesday night, 27 January 2026, after being swept away by floods in Mozambique earlier this month.

Mngwevu’s family confirmed the news in a short media statement, asking for privacy as they mourn the untimely passing of their son, father and husband.

Andile tragically passed away while on a trip to Mozambique when the vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by floodwaters in the Chokwe region last week.

“This devastating incident has left his family, friends and colleagues heartbroken and struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss,” the family statement read.

The African National Congress (ANC) thanked all those who were involved in locating the late MMC.

“The ANC in Ekurhuleni extends its deepest condolences to the Mngwevu family, comrades, colleagues, and the communities of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng. We have lost a principled revolutionary and servant of the people,” said ANC regional secretary Jongizizwe Dlabathi.
