  • Sergeant Masibulele Qinisile was named the Laureate Award winner at the National Excellence Awards for saving a family during a violent hostage situation.
  • The 41-year-old officer engaged an armed suspect single-handedly after his colleague was disarmed and fired upon during the domestic violence call.
  • As the recipient of the National Commissioner’s Award, Qinisile was gifted a brand-new vehicle, officially becoming a first-time car owner.

For 41-year-old Sergeant Masibulele Qinisile, a standard call to a domestic disturbance turned into a life-defining moment of bravery.

The Eastern Cape officer, stationed at Cacadu in the Chris Hani District, found himself staring down the barrel of a gun when a hostage situation escalated, leaving a mother and child’s lives hanging in the balance.

The scene turned chaotic when the suspect disarmed one of the responding officers and opened fire. Showing immense courage under pressure, Qinisile engaged the gunman single-handedly.

His swift, selfless actions successfully neutralised the threat, ensuring that the suspect’s wife, child, and the police crew all returned home safely that day.

The Sergeant’s valour did not go unnoticed at this year’s National Excellence Awards. Beyond the medals and titles, Qinisile received a reward that will change his daily life: a brand-new car.

For a man who has dedicated his career to protecting others on foot and in patrol vans, the keys represent more than just a prize; they signify the profound gratitude of a nation.

Walking away as a first-time car owner, Qinisile’s story has touched the hearts of colleagues and citizens alike.
