According to TVSA primetime TV viewing figures, e.tv lost 1 million viewers in April when it launched its new raunchy show The Black Door, which replaced Imbewu: The Seed in the popular 9.30 p.m. slot.
The data further shows that Imbewu: The Seed lost over 1 million viewers when it was moved to the 9 p.m. slot. Imbewu: The Seed lost viewers in April when e.tv replaced it on the 9.30 pm slot with its new risqué show The Black Door. The popular telenovela is now competing in the 9 p.m. timeslot with Muvhango and The Queen.
Imbewu had 3,442,796 viewers in March when it aired at 9.30 p.m., but that number dropped to 2,860,068 when the channel moved it to the 9 p.m. slot in April, while The Black Door had 2,449,977 viewers.
The Black Door has been dubbed Mzansi’s Emmanuelle due to its graphic depictions of sex workers. Before the show, Black Brain stated that they spent a lot of time with sex workers, getting to know them.
“We didn’t just want to do a sex scene, but tell stories. We came to understand that when they go to places that I’ve never been to, it’s their place of work.”
“For example, people have relationships at work, but what does a relationship look like between two sex workers?”
Meanwhile, social media users seem to be hooked, here are some of their reactions below:
