  • Ekurhuleni MMC Andile Mngwevu is missing after a vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by floodwaters in Mozambique.
  • Rescue teams have made contact with five people who were travelling with him, while search efforts continue. Authorities have urged the public and media to respect the family’s privacy as investigations and rescue operations remain ongoing.

The MMC for Roads and Transport Management in the City of Ekurhuleni, Andile Mngwevu, is currently missing following a tragic incident in which a vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by floodwaters in Mozambique.

Details surrounding the incident remain unclear at this stage. However, a South African rescue mission has made contact with five individuals who were travelling with Mngwevu when the vehicle was washed away.

Mngwevu was reportedly en route to the Chókwè area at the time of the incident.

The Office of the Executive Mayor, in coordination with national government, has facilitated support for MMC Mngwevu’s spouse, who arrived in Mozambique on Thursday night.

National authorities are also exploring additional support measures, including security and evacuation assistance, as more information becomes available.

“Search and verification efforts are ongoing, and the City remains in close contact with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and other relevant national structures. Further updates will be communicated through official city channels as soon as confirmed information is received,” said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Phakamile Mbengashe.

During this profoundly difficult time, the City has appealed to the public and the media to respect the Mngwevu family’s privacy and to refrain from speculation. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all those affected as efforts continue to establish the full circumstances,” Mbengashe added.
