Private school matric pass rate dips slightly to 98.3% for class of 2025

Private schools recorded a 98.3% matric pass rate for the Class of 2025, a slight decrease from last year.
More than 17,400 candidates wrote the IEB exams, with over 89% qualifying for bachelor’s degree study.
The IEB says the drop is not alarming, while public school results will be released later on Monday.

The matric results of private schools have seen a slight decrease for the Class of 2025, with a pass rate of 98.3%.

The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) released its National Senior Certificate examination results on Monday morning.

In total, more than 17,400 candidates, predominantly from private schools, sat for the examinations across the country.

In a statement, the IEB said just over 89% of candidates qualified for a bachelor’s pass, slightly down from the previous year.

Nearly 8% qualified for diploma study, while around 1.3% achieved entry to Higher Certificate study. A very small number obtained an endorsed National Senior Certificate.

A total of 161 students achieved distinctions in all their subjects.

IEB CEO Confidence Dikgole said the decline is not cause for concern, noting that fluctuations in the pass rate are expected.

Dikgole said that as the IEB continues to grow, small fluctations in the aggregate pass rate are statistically expected and internationally observed in stable assessment systems.

Meanwhile, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube is expected to announce the national matric results for public schools on Monday evening.
