Government terminates lease with company linked to Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala

The DPWI has scrapped a lease agreement with a firm linked to Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala following a probe into how it was awarded.
Investigators found the facility was never declared surplus by SAPS, meaning the property could not be lawfully leased to a third party.
The Department has vowed to work with law enforcement to protect state property and ensure those involved in the deal are held accountable.

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) has terminated a lease agreement with Medicare 24 Tshwane District on Friday morning.

The company is reportedly linked to Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, and the move follows serious allegations regarding the unlawful manner in which the contract was originally awarded.

An internal investigation revealed that the lease was legally invalid because the hospital facility had never been declared surplus by the South African Police Service (SAPS).

As the designated user of the property, SAPS remains the rightful occupant, making the lease to a private entity an unauthorised transaction.

The Department reaffirmed its commitment to protecting state assets and ensuring transparency.

In a statement, the DPWI confirmed it will continue to pursue accountability through internal probes and full cooperation with law-enforcement agencies to address the irregularities.

“We will now embark on an extensive internal investigation to ensure that any officials who played a role in authorising this lease are held accountable.

We will also work closely with law-enforcement agencies and hand over any information relating to possible criminality to ensure that those responsible face the full might of the law.

We are working decisively to rid the Department of Public Works & Infrastructure of corruption and abuse, and to ensure that it delivers meaningfully for the South African people.” said DPWI Minister Dean Macpherson
