  • President Cyril Ramaphosa says the ANC is confident it will recover votes lost in the 2024 elections, describing the upcoming municipal polls as a key test.
  • He says the party has learned from its setbacks and is preparing a strategy ahead of the 2026 elections.
  • Meanwhile, his comments on paving rural roads have sparked debate in Rustenburg, where residents remain frustrated by long-standing infrastructure issues.

African National Congress (ANC) president Cyril Ramaphosa says he is confident the party will regain all the votes it lost in the 2024 general elections.

The ANC suffered a major electoral setback in 2024, losing more than half of its support and ending its 30-year majority rule, which forced the party to partner with opposition parties to form a Government of National Unity.

Ramaphosa says the upcoming municipal elections will be a crucial test for the party as it works to rebuild public confidence.

He was speaking in Rustenburg, North West, during the ANC’s 114th anniversary campaign programme.

Responding to a question from Kaya News, Ramaphosa said the party has reflected on its electoral losses, learned valuable lessons, and developed a clear plan to secure victory in future elections.

He is expected to formally outline the ANC’s 2026 election strategy during the party’s anniversary celebrations at Moruleng Stadium on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the President has advocated for paving roads in rural provinces instead of tarring them, saying the approach could be more cost-effective and efficient in addressing persistent potholes.

His remarks come as the Rustenburg municipality undertakes last-minute road upgrades ahead of the ANC’s anniversary celebrations, a move that has drawn mixed reactions from residents.

Residents say they have long raised concerns about damaged roads and severe potholes that have gone unfixed for years.

In response, Ramaphosa said paving roads could help improve infrastructure while supporting local economic development and job creation.
