  • Advocate Mothibi will succeed Shamila Batohi as the National Director of Public Prosecutions on 1 February 2026.
  • The current SIU head brings a wealth of expertise from his former roles as a prosecutor, magistrate, and legal lead at SARS.
  • Leonard Lekgetho, the current CEO of the Special Investigating Unit, has been appointed as acting head to fill the vacancy.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Advocate Jan Lekgoa Mothibi as the new National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), effective from 1 February 2026.

Mothibi, the current head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), will succeed Advocate Shamila Batohi at the conclusion of her term.

Mothibi’s career began in the Johannesburg and Soweto courts, where he served as both a public prosecutor and a magistrate.

His extensive background spans the public and private sectors, including senior leadership roles at the South African Revenue Service (SARS) as head of corporate legal services and governance.

To fill the impending vacancy at the SIU, the President has designated the unit’s current CEO, Leonard Lekgetho, to serve as acting head.

The transition ensures leadership stability across the country’s key investigative and prosecutorial bodies.
