Anthony Joshua injured in fatal Nigeria crash, two friends killed

Former British world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has survived a fatal road accident in Ogun State, Nigeria, which claimed the lives of two close associates.

Matchroom Boxing confirmed on Monday that team members Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele died in the collision.

Joshua, 36, sustained minor injuries in the crash, which occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The incident took place just over a week after his sixth-round knockout victory against American social media star Jake Paul in Miami.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that five men were involved in the accident.

Preliminary findings suggest the vehicle was speeding when it lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre, subsequently crashing into a stationary truck parked at the roadside.

While two passengers walked away unhurt, the FRSC confirmed that the crash resulted in two fatalities and minor injuries for the boxer.

The agency noted on X that “excessive speed and wrongful overtaking” remain leading causes of fatal accidents on Nigerian highways.

Joshua, born to British-Nigerian parents, has long-standing ties to the area, having attended boarding school in Ikenne before returning to the UK as a teenager.

Local police and the FRSC continue to investigate the specific circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
