Adverse weather conditions wreak havoc in Gauteng

- JMPD has confirmed multiple serious and fatal accidents linked to the adverse weather conditions.
Extreme rainfall has left Gauteng in shambles, with some infrastructure damaged and fallen trees obstructing roads, making it hard for residents in the economic hub of the country.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has reported the following incidents and obstructions in the City of Johannesburg and urged motorists to exercise extreme caution as the weather conditions continue to worsen.
Fallen trees obstructing roadways:
- Newlands: Main Road and Garden Road
- Bergbron: Gordon Road
- Yeoville: Joe Slovo Drive
- Langlaagte: Albertina Sisulu Road
- Kensington: Queen Street
- Joburg CBD: Corner of Albertina Sisulu and Von Wielligh Street
- Jabulani: Koma Road
- Phiri: Manotshe Street
- Midrand: Old Pretoria Road
- Houghton Estate: 5th Avenue
- Randjespark, Midrand: Road Crescent
- Nasrec: Nasrec Road
Serious flooding and water overflow have been reported in the Protea Industrial Park area. Officials have also confirmed that serious and fatal accidents have occurred due to the unfavourable weather in Johannesburg.
“There has been one serious accident in Sandton, one serious accident in Soweto and one fatal accident on Malibongwe Drive. These reports underscore the dire need for heightened road safety,” said JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla.
The South African Weather Service warned of a level 9 disruptive rainfall in Gauteng that is expected to last until Monday.
